The Olympic Delivery Authority and the London Borough of Newham have approved the masterplan for Westfield’s town centre district of Stratford City.

Stratford’s Town Centre, known as Zone 1, was approved today. It will consist of 175,000 sq m of retail, leisure and entertainment facilities, 106,000 sq m of office space, 34,800 sq m of hotel space, and 1,224 apartments. The retail space will be anchored by department store operator John Lewis and supermarket Waitrose.

Westfield said its development – which is next to the London 2012 Olympic site and is the UK’s largest retail-led, mixed-use urban regeneration project, would be underpinned by stringent environmental and sustainable development standards.

Stratford City Zone 1 is due to open in easter 2011.

John Burton, development director at Westfield, said: ‘The resolution for the Masterplan for Zone 1 and overall Site Wide Strategies are important milestones in Stratford City’s development. We now move to the next stage of the planning process…about the detailed design of all of the proposed buildings for Zone 1.’
