Westminster Council is planning a £1m redevelopment of a street near London’s Oxford Street to provide an ‘oasis of calm’ for tired shoppers.

The council wants to transform Nutford Place, which is half way between Marble Arch and Edgware road tube station, to introduce more seating areas and trees.

Westminster is also considering closing off the road and turning it into a pedestrianised square which could be used as a public gallery.

Nearby New Quebec Street would also be revamped with the support of landowners The Portman Estate to provide a zebra crossing and new paving.

The plans go out to public consultation tomorrow.
