City of York Council has given the go-ahead for a large residential scheme aimed at improving the city centre

The council’s planners voted 10-2 in favour of the reserved matters application to develop a 10 acre (4 ha) brownfield site in the Hungate area of the city.

The scheme is to be developed by Hungate Regeneration, which is a joint venture between Crosby Lend Lease, Land Securities and Evans Property Group. It will comprise 720 homes, a new office for the City of York Council and a small amount of retail and leisure space.

Phase one of the development will commence next month and feature 163 homes.

The scheme was approved at a meeting last night after it was given the Green light by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in September 2005. It received outline planning consent two months earlier.
