One alumnus of the University of Sussex in Brighton will have more than a passing interest in Brighton & Hove Albion’s FA Cup quarter-final clash on 19 March.

Andrew Pettit, partner at private equity real estate business Revcap, owns the opposing team, Grimsby Town.

In 2021, when he fulfilled every football fan’s childhood dream by buying his hometown club, with tech entrepreneur Jason Stockwood, it was immediately relegated from the League Two to the National League.

But disappointment has turned to excitement, with the team’s shock 2-1 win over premiership side Southampton in the fifth round earlier this month, and the Mariners making history as the first side in the competition’s history to win five games against higher league opposition.

Pettit is happy his side is “helping to put some pride back into the town” and adds: “Going back to Brighton in the quarter-final will be an even harder task, but we dare to dream, as we’re only three wins from Europe.”

Eye wonders if Pettit has considered the business opportunities of printing the Revcap logo on team mascot Harry the Haddock.
