Petrol prices are going up, airline ticket prices are going up and the price of Marmite is going up, but our PR fees remain stubbornly unaffected by inflation.
We approached our eight clients at the beginning of the year, suggesting our hard work and stunning results merited a fee rise. We got nul points. The excuses were a combination of “only just recovering after Covid”, “not quite sure where the market is going” and “just had to let two of my staff go”.
All of our clients, bar The Good Life vegan café, are going to Mipim, and we’re trying to work out how we can get them to contribute to our costs for the week – £1k a client perhaps?
Still, new business opportunities have been pouring in this year. A brochure here, a three-month project there. No retainer work so far, but the prospect of Soph and I being able to afford a summer holiday abroad – and not just to the Costa del Crime – increases every day.
“Czechia?” Soph suddenly exclaimed with bemusement the other day. Turns out that was the answer to the first Worldle, which is like Wordle but you have to guess the country just from the outline. If the answer is not the UK or Italy, I think I’m going to struggle.
