Plans emerged for a radical restoration of the Houses of Parliament to refit and repair the building at a cost of up to £4bn.

The Joint Committee on the Palace of Westminster recommended the plans, and in 2019 MPs voted to accept moving from the building while the restoration work was carried out.

However, projected costs and timelines have since spiralled out of control, causing a public backlash.

A report in February 2022 warned that the basic cost of essential repairs was around £7bn to £13bn and would take up to 28 years to complete.
