London mayor Sadiq Khan revealed plans for 11,154 new council homes at social rent levels after agreeing deals worth £1bn with 26 London boroughs.

The deals were part of the Building Council Homes for Londoners scheme at the time targeting 10,000 new homes by 2022.

That target was successfully surpassed earlier this year, and in July Khan announced that the council housebuilding target was being stretched to 20,000 by 2024.

However, over 250,000 people still sit on council waiting lists in the capital, with London often described as the epicentre of the UK’s housing crisis.
