    Planning: preparation is rife as Scotland exercises new powers

    The plan covers the period up to 2011 and extends across the former Strathclyde Regional Council area. It identifies a requirement for a further 5,350 houses between the years 1996 and 2011. In retail terms, the plan identifies a number of locations where additional retail floor space is required.

    A Joint Structure Plan Unit, advised by planning consultancy Babtie, now oversees the structure plan. Following the publication of a consultation draft in 1999, deposit is expected this autumn, with an Examination in Public to follow in 2001.
