Speciality eateries on the up as appetite for fast-food chains shrinks

Data – largest net falls among top 40 brands

Restaurants specialising in niche cuisines have expanded rapidly in the UK over the past 12 months while traditional fast-food chains have shrunk their estates, according to exclusive data from the Local Data Company (LDC).

Restaurants specialising in vegan, Jamaican, and Asian dishes were the fastest-growing categories by percentage of new units opened.

The number of vegan outlets leapt a whopping 52% in the year to January 2019. The number of Iranian, vegetarian, Lebanese and Korean restaurants also increased significantly.
