Airports operator BAA has for the first time publicly given its support to the construction of a third runway and sixth terminal at London’s Heathrow airport. Financial Times

The government is to launch in autumn launch of a public consultation into the potential next phase of the expansion of Heathrow. Environmental groups and local residents oppose any rurther expansion of airports in the south-east of England.

Europe's busiest airport already operates from its two runways at virtually full capacity.

Tony Douglas, chief executive of baa Heathrow, said BAA would be 'campaigning for permission to grow'. BAA’s decision radically to change its public stance towards expansion at Heathrow is the clearest sign yet that the government is making progress in its drive to ensure that a third runway is compatible with meeting its environmental targets.
