Bellway Homes has agreed a joint venture with Leeds City Council for a £1.2bn 20-year regeneration scheme in deprived areas in the the east and south-east of the city.

Leeds City Council’s executive board today agreed to back a strategic partnership with Bellway that will deliver the EASEL (East and South East Leeds) scheme.

The scheme spans one of the largest regeneration areas in the country, covering an area of 42,000 acres (1,700 ha) and four council wards. Bellway and the council will establish a jointly owned company that will reinvest the proceeds of development.

The plans feature more than 5,000 homes, neighbourhood centres, schools, health provision and public realm developments. Planning applications have already been submitted for more than 700 homes on eight sites in Gipton and Seacroft.

Councillor Les Carter, executive board member for neighbourhoods and housing, said: ‘The £1.2bn EASEL project is a major long-term commitment to improve one of the city’s most deprived areas. We can now move forward with this joint venture and begin to tackle the root causes of deprivation in east and south-east Leeds.’
