A date has been set for the inquiry into the hotly disputed Croydon Gateway development site

The planning inspectorate has announced a date of 17 September for the long-awaited hearing to finally decide the future of the site.

The inquiry is to investigate Croydon Council's decision to issue compulsory purchase orders on the site and the Government Office for London's decision to call in developer Arrowcroft's arena-based proposals, which are supported by the council.

Arrowcroft and Frogmore, who have signed a development agreement with the council, propose a 12,500-seat arena on the site, as well as homes, shops and restaurants, while rival developers Stanhope and Schroders own the site and have planning permission for a development comprising homes and offices.

Arrowcroft development director Daniel Carter said: ‘We look forward to the inquiry and a speedy conclusion of the challenge to the council’s policies that has delayed the implementation of this exciting project, which is so important to revitalizing the Town Centre environment.’
