The Department of Transport has confirmed that the East Midlands will benefit from two new railway stations.

Corby will get a railway station more than 17 years after its previous station was closed. It has been the largest town in Europe without a train station since the last passenger services ceased in 1990.

It will be joined by another new station called East Midlands Parkway, which will primarily serve East Midlands Airport. The station will be located close to the A453 which connects the M1 to Nottingham.

The station will be served by two trains an hour and a daily direct service between Lincoln and London will be introduced.

Both stations are set to open in December 2008

The news came in the announcement that Stagecoach Midland Rail – a subsidiary of Stagecoach Group – has been awarded the contract to run the new East Midlands franchise from November this year.

The new franchise is a combination of the existing Midland Mainline services from London St Pancras and the eastern section of Central Trains.

The region’s stations will also receive more than £5m for improvements and at least 1,250 extra car parking spaces.
