Scottish entrepreneur Steven McLeod has submitted a planning application for a £75m luxury hotel in Larbert, Falkirk.

McLeod, who runs Aurora Hotels, wants to build a 220-bedroom hotel, spa and 85 upmarket homes in the grounds of the five-star Glenbervie House Hotel.

He bought the Glenbervie Hotel in 2007 and spent £5m converting it into a five-star hotel.

The proposed hotel would include a ballroom, auditorium and two restaurants.

David Bell, director at Aurora Hotels’ planning consultant Jones Lang LaSalle, said: ‘While there are short to medium term issues with the wider economy which may put downward pressure on demand, by the time the project is built out, the expectations are that the national economy will once again be in a period of growth.’

Aurora also owns the Airth Castle Hotel. Construction work is expected to start in the spring with completion towards the end of next year.
