Wakefield Metropolitan District Council has approved plans for a 100,000 sq ft extension for the Ridings Shopping Centre and a 12,000 sq ft office building for Johnston Press.

The extension to the scheme, which is owned by Moorfield Group and held in its Moorfield Real Estate Fund, will comprise a three-storey addition between Rodney Yard and the existing service yard entrance of Southgate.

It will be available to new retailers and existing retailers, looking to expand into larger space. Retailers at the scheme will include Bank Fashion, T Mobile, Sports Direct and Esquire’s Café.

Johnston Press, home of the Wakefield Express, will occupy the 12,000 sq ft office building which will also have its own dedicated car park.

Mark Holmes, director at Moorfield Group, said: ‘We anticipate that the proposed extension, as well as the current enhancement works, will not only improve the shopping experience for our regular visitors, but also attract new retailers and shoppers to The Ridings.’
