Ingmar Bergman’s estate on a wind-swept island in the Baltic Sea is up for sale, complete with a private cinema, an outdoor pool and an ambience that helped the Swedish director explore the dark side of the human condition.

Potential buyers of the four buildings must submit their bids by Aug 20, according to Lars Fogelklou at Residence, the Stockholm-based broker that’s handling the sale. Bergman, who died in 2007, lived and worked in the property on the secluded Baltic isle of Faaroe for almost 40 years.

'If one wished to be solemn, it could be said that I had found my real home; if one wished to be light-hearted, it could be said that it was love at first sight,' Bergman said of his home, according to the Web site of Christie’s Great Estates, which is advising on the sale.
