Olympic planners decision was immediately welcomed by business groups. Armitt, 60, has a wealth of experience in the construction sector.

Among his immediate priorities will be letting the contracts for the main venues, completing the decontamination work on the site and overseeing the start of work on transport enhancements, and utility systems for the Olympic park.

He will take up the £250,000 position, working three and a half days a week, in September after standing down from Network Rail in July.
