David McLean Developments has signed up to develop a £104m courts development for Her Majesty’s Court Service in Aberystwyth.

The 37,040 sq ft scheme will amalgamate the County Court and Magistrates’ Court buildings, currently in separate locations in the town, into one development.

The law courts scheme will comprise a Magistrate’s Court, Civil and Family Court and a Crown Court. There will also be a conference and court room and offices.

The new law courts will be situated adjacent to the town’s new Welsh Assembly Government office, which has just started on site and is due for completion in 2009, and the new offices for Ceredigion County, which have just obtained planning approval.

New civic quarter

Richard Dean, managing director of David McLean Developments, said: ‘Ultimately this scheme will meant that a new civic quarter is created in a primary location at Park Avenue.

'We believe that the plan we have submitted ticks all the boxes in terms of requirement and creativity.’

Luigi Strinati, Her Majesty’s Court Service director for Mid and West Wales, said: ‘We are committed to building a modern new court to benefit local court users and staff. We look forward to having new premises.’

If the project is granted planning, it is due to commence in spring this year and complete by late summer 2009.

Atkins is the architect.
