One of the largest single regeneration projects in Ireland Athlone Town Centre had a strong opening yesterday as Ireland’s retail boom continues.

More than 15,000 people attended the launch of the €500m (£348m) mixed use development, which is being developed by Gallico Developments and construction company JJ Rhatigan and Co.

It comprises Ireland’s largest regional shopping centre, a four star Sheraton Hotel which opens next April, 160 apartments and a 1,300 space car park. It has provided more than 1,250 jobs in the region. The 300,000 sq ft shopping centre is anchored by a Marks & Spencer and features other retailers including Zara, H&M, Marks & Spencer, Next, Tommy Hilfiger and Esprit.

Ireland stocks up

‘Athlone is now one of the largest retail towns in the country with only Dublin, Cork and Belfast ranking above it in terms of provision of retail offering,’ said John O’Sullivan, director at Gallico Developments.
