The Prince of Wales is close to victory in the battle over a £1bn flats development in a historic part of London but there are warnings that his intervention could threaten 5,000 jobs.

A meeting today between the development arm of the Qatari royal family and the architect Lord Rogers could lead to the project at Chelsea Barracks being delayed for a year. The Prince wrote to Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr Al-Thani, the prime minister of Qatar, urging him to scrap the modern steel and glass development.
