The London listed student housing operator has won planning consent for 604 beds in its schemes at Slade Park in Oxford and at Chalmers Street in Edinburgh. Unite is planning to spend £57m to develop both schemes.

In Oxford, Unite is planning to develop a 353-bed scheme which it will then manage.

It will be developed on a former Territorial Army centre site on Horspath Driftway. Development is expected to begin in Spring 2009.

The scheme is being developed in conjunction with Berkeley Homes, which is developing 72 homes alongside it.

In Edinburgh, Unite is to develop a 251-bed scheme on Chalmers Street next to Quartermile. Work is expected to start on site next month.

Tim Mitchell, group property director at Unite said: ‘We remain focused on growing Unite Group’s presence in premium student accommodation markets.’

‘The markets in both these cities are holding up extremely well in value terms, not least because of their academic prestige which ensures consistent student demand.’
