The University of Cumbria has outlined its plans for a £160m property development after being set up a year ago.

A new £70m campus in Carlisle will form the centre piece of the wider expansion of its estate in Cumbria and North Lancashire.

The university also intends to develop further sites at Ambleside, Barrow, Carlisle, Lancaster and Newton Rigg.

Representing all regions

‘Our assumptions reflect our view that we must represent all the main regions in Cumbria by providing world class facilities across the region,’ said Peter Arner, the university’s director of resources, finances and estates.

‘By providing five major campuses across two counties, we will move from a collection of legacy institutions to a high performing University institution.’

The university was formed in August last year through the merger of St Martin’s College, Cumbria Institute of the Arts and the Cumbrian campuses of the University of Central Lancashire.

It is funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and the Higher Education Funding Council for England.
