Waitrose is to open its first store in Cardiff.

The retailer has signed up to open a 38,000 sq ft store at Deutsche Bank’s Avenue Business Park.

Waitrose has taken a 20 year lease on the former DIY store premises.

Quality food

Nigel Keen, Waitrose director of development, said: ‘This will enable us to deliver a wider choice of quality foods and services, which we believe will help add to the vibrancy of the area and retain trade within the local business community.’

Owen Pritchard, associate at Knight Frank who acted for the landlord, said: ‘Cardiff is crying out for a top quality food retailer like Waitrose. Cardiff residents will now have an improved choice of where they shop.’

Expansion

Waitrose is embarking on a substantial expansion programme. Managing director Mark Price is looking to double the size of the business within the next five to ten years.

The Cardiff store will be Waitrose’s fourth store in South Wales. The other stores are in Monmouth, Abergavenny and Barry.
