As it is now December, Property Eye is feeling a little less bah-humbug and will now permit full mention of the C-word.

We know Christmas is on its way as our inbox has started filling up with news of festive lights being switched on in high streets and shopping centres around the country by various panto stars, DJs and other local celebrities.

And after recent years, when Covid-19 spikes meant many such events passed without any ceremony, such stories are especially welcome. One in particular caught our eye this week – at the Belfry Shopping Centre in Redhill, Surrey, which jumped on the World Cup bandwagon for its big Christmas lights switch on.

As well as the arrival of the man in red at the obligatory grotto, shoppers were treated to a cascade of 3,000 football balloons and could take selfies with life-size cutouts of the likes of Ronaldo and Gareth Southgate or try out football skills with real players from the local Merstham FC team.

It seems as if even Santa himself has come down with a different kind of fever that is sweeping the nation and their beloved offspring.
