Interest in paddle-boarding, surfing and kayaking has soared during lockdown as people look to connect to the natural world. Gently punting around an open expanse of water is a relaxing way to unwind and find peace and tranquility.

So you have to feel some degree of sympathy for the 18 hardy souls from London-based agency GCW who have decided to paddle 23 miles along the murky waters of the Thames in two-man kayaks next month.

At an estimated speed of 2.5 miles an hour, the company anticipates it will take its team around 10 hours to travel from Pangbourne to Marlow – that time includes getting in and out of the kayak to navigate eight locks, not to mention angry swans and pleasure cruises.

The kayakers hope their Herculean feat will raise lots of money for Elifar, which helps improve the care, facilities and equipment available to profoundly disabled children and young adults.

The event takes place on 4 August and you can sponsor the team at the Virgin Money Giving website (just search for ‘GCW Paddle Challenge’).
