A nursery that had been based in the basement of Grenfell Tower has finally moved to a permanent home six years after the tragic fire.

Grenfell Early Years Nursery, a cornerstone of the Lancaster West Estate, was housed at the foot of the tower block for nearly 30 years.

The nursery has now moved to a full-time home at the neighbouring Ilys Booker Centre, where it took temporary space following the fire, before a search for a permanent home was launched in 2018, with Kensington and Chelsea Council appointing architecture firm Perkins&Will to lead it.

A £2m refurbishment of the Ilys Booker Centre has now been completed and the nursery’s part-refurbed, part-new-build centre, which has been given two single-storey extensions, can accommodate up to 32 children.

Dee Dainton, management committee member for Grenfell Early Years Nursery, said the opening was “an occasion of mixed emotions” and called the building a “worthy tribute” to the children and members of the community who lost their lives in the Grenfell tragedy.
