Last week, Mipim returned to its regular spring slot for the first time since 2019, with the organisers proudly stating that “over 20,000 registered delegates” had signed up.

MIPIM 2022

Some flew, some drove, some cycled and some caught the train to Cannes, but there were a few whose journey did not quite go according to plan…

Eye understands that a group of Mipim attendees, including a couple of lawyers and one reporter, missed their Tuesday evening flight to the trade show. Did they have a few too many glasses of rosé in the departure lounge? Were they just cutting it fine?

Nope. It was the requirement for those boarding flights to France to wear surgical face masks – rather than the cloth ones that pass muster in the UK – that caught them out.

A last-minute dash to a nearby face mask vending machine was to no avail as the machine was not working. Eye can confirm that at least one of the unlucky lot was forced to stay at a budget hotel at Gatwick for the night and catch a flight the next morning… after dashing to the Boots to get their hands on the requisite face covering, of course.
