John Lewis and Waitrose signed as anchor tenants for a £1.4bn redevelopment of Croydon’s Whitgift shopping centre.

The project, led by a JV of Westfield and Hammerson, planned to provide 500,000 sq ft of shops and restaurants, plus 1,000 homes.

The future seemed bright for the scheme until the plans were shelved in 2019.

But earlier this month, Westfield revealed it wanted to revive the plans.

UK COO Scott Parsons said the reworked proposals would not look like the previous plans and that Croydon was a “great destination with a lot of potential”.
