The construction of Crossrail formally started on 15 May at the site of the new Canary Wharf station.
Following 35 years of planning and development, then transport secretary Lord Adonis drove the first pile into the North Dock.
Fast-forward to this year and after a series of delays – and running £4bn over budget – the Elizabeth line has now been given an official launch date of 24 May.
Transport for London said it expected the new line to add an estimated £42bn to the UK economy and that it would also be crucial to London’s recovery from the pandemic.
