Soph and I are not particularly old but we do feel very old school when it comes to PR.

Spin class

We don’t send out an Instagram post on 14 February saying “Happy Valentines Day from Pastis Communications”, we don’t tweet a pic of us on International Women’s Day, saying “We are strong, we are powerful etc” and we most certainly don’t talk bullshit about what PR is.

At a PRCA (the PR industry’s equivalent of RICS) conference the other day (we do occasionally go), the message from one session was: “People do not buy goods and services. They buy relations, stories and magic.” I’d gladly sell some of my relations, quite cheaply, but really!

I’d also sell one of my clients for free. The one who asked me to send out a press release, only to ask me an hour later to recall it because the vendor in the transaction had not given their approval. Two publications had already published the story and created a URL, which can still be found on a Google search.

We continue to do a fair bit of project work, which is mostly dull – copy for brochures and websites, some press releases – but we really need a nice big, fat, juicy, new client. We have been asked to pitch to a biggish propco in a couple of weeks’ time. We have a chance as long as they’re not looking for “relations, stories and magic”.
